The National Fire Prevention Association recommends changing the batteries twice a year, and what better way to remember than with the time change when we change all of the clocks?

Other things important to check when looking at your smoke detectors this weekend are:

Are they free of dust and debris?

Are they within 10 years of manufacturer's date?

Do you have them in the right places?

If you have any questions about your detectors or home safety in general, please do not hesitate to contact our station at 231.334.3279 to schedule a home safety survey or smoke detector check. These services are free of charge and can help you stay safe all year round!

annual memorial service, marking the anniversary of the attacks on the Twin Towers in New
York City. Particularly remembered will be the 343 firefighters and medics who lost their lives in
the tragedy.

The memorial will begin at 8:30 AM in the Glen Lake Fire Station, located at 6401 W. State
Street, Glen Arbor.

The program will feature remarks by Dusty G. Shultz, Superintendent of the Sleeping Bear
Dunes National Lakeshore, comments by the Reverend Russell Logston, Pastor of Empire
United Methodist Church, and music selections by bagpiper Jack Fellows and coronetist Norm
Wheeler.

The ceremony will be complimented by tours of the 9-11 Memorial Garden, designed by local
artist and designer the late Ted Peterson, located outside the fire station, titled "We Remember
The Fallen, The Bravery, The Sacrifice." An artifact, consisting of a rusty, twisted steel beam,
recovered from the Twin Towers wreckage, is highlighted on a basalt column in the middle of a
flowing infinity pool.

The public and all local firefighters, EMTs, law enforcement, NPS, and military personnel are
invited to attend.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07645297918257793520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2196425050922333758.post-71239102731845086932015-08-05T21:58:00.001-04:002015-08-05T22:02:57.487-04:00Thoughts and Updates

Our apologies for not having any updates sooner, but as with nearly all of the community we are without internet access.

As of today, the Glen Lake Fire Department is very happy to say that with assistance from firefighters from the communities of Northport, Leland, and Suttons Bay we were able to access nearly every structure affected by the storm in our community. Additionally, we were able to make contact with a great number of residents over the past days as concerns of welfare and safety were noted. Throughout the storm the support from other agencies and communities has allowed us to maintain a standard duty crew for emergencies as they arise as well as performing the other storm related duties. We could not have gotten through all of these tasks accomplished without the outside aid and assistance.

Now for some additional important thoughts... First and foremost, thank you so much for the support you have shown us over the past few days. All of the donations of food, Gatorade, and water mean a great deal to us. Perhaps even more important, we cannot express the appreciation for the assistance you have offered each other. Supporting neighbors, friends, and even those simply visiting the area has been a tremendous factor in the clean up as it has allowed us to stay focused on addressing concerns of life safety and structural stability. We would also like to offer our gratitude to the responders, dispatchers, utility workers and and countless others who have assisted us on responses and have helped with the clean up efforts.

Please remain strong and together as a community as you have shown you can.

We know its been a while since our last post, but we are back with more things to share!

First, on the note of fireworks.. Fireworks are only allowed to be set off the day before, the day of, and the day after major holidays per local ordinances. Besides that legal note, please exercise great caution when using fireworks as the weather has been rather dry and the sparks and debris can quickly lead to grass and structure fires.

Parades and other ceremonies in the area to take note of for the Fourth of July.. There will be a flag raising ceremony at the Old Settler's Picnic Grounds on Glen Lake at 10am and then the annual Fourth of July Parade in Glen Arbor begins at Noon.

Pancakes!! This is the most important note you will read here all weekend! The Glen Arbor Fire and Rescue Association is once again hosting its annual all you can eat pancake breakfast at the Glen Arbor Township Hall on SUNDAY JULY 5TH! Funds generated from the event go to support firefighter training and equipment purchases that would not otherwise be possible. Please come out and support the event if you are able, we would greatly appreciate your support!

As always, please stay safe during the holiday weekend and be mindful of cyclists, paddlers, and pedestrians!

Happy 4th of July!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07645297918257793520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2196425050922333758.post-29373752845309240032015-05-03T09:57:00.000-04:002015-05-03T09:57:01.300-04:00Red Flag Warnings and Burn Permit StatusWith the unusually dry weather we have been experiencing, combined with the high heat and low relative humidity, conditions continue to be very conducive to grassland and wildland fires.

Prior to burning each day, regardless of any precipitation, wind conditions, etc we ask that you please check the Michigan DNR website for the current status of burn permits in the area. That link is www.michigan.gov/burnpermit If you do not have internet access, the DNR also have a hotline established, the phone number for that information is 866.922.2876. The web link also contains other information about when a permit is required and what materials are legally allowed to be burned.

What is a Red Flag Warning?
A Red Flag Warning, or fire weather warning, means that the National Weather Service has identified the conditions in the area are right for rapid growth and development of wildland fires. When Red Flag Warnings are issued, no burning of any kind is recommended. Factors into the issuing of a Red Flag Warning include: air temperature, relative humidity, and wind conditions. While they may be beautiful, they are also dangerous as pack ice is not as safe or stable as the ice on inland lake. Please, if you do venture out on to the ice, exercise extreme caution.

The link below contains information from the Indiana Dunes area regarding ice safety. Please, if you have just a few minutes, review this information as a great deal of it applies here as well.
One of the biggest hazards present in the winter beyond the slick and icy roadways is the ice and frozen bodies of water.
While ice may appear safe, and in many instances is quite thick there is no such thing as safe ice. Spring fed lakes, inlets, and currents below the surface can lead to weakened areas in most any lake. To help prepare our personnel be ready for ice related emergencies we conduct annual training with the United States Coast Guard (USCG). This past week, each one of our shifts had the opportunity to train with the USCG to refresh and improve upon techniques to help individuals in trouble should they become stuck on the ice or have fallen through the ice. Below are some pictures from the training conducted!

As always, stay safe out there and if you have any questions feel free to ask!
While the ice can be fun and relatively safe for fishing, skating, and other hobbies, there are some dangers everyone must remain aware of.

Always watch for cracks forming in the ice as they may show weak spots

Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return

Be vigilant as ice conditions can change rapidly with wind and temperature shifts

It was just last year when Lake Michigan froze out all the way past the Manitou Islands and many beautiful ice cave structures were formed by the lake. While these ice caves and their beauty is very intriguing to many, please keep in mind that ice can still be dangerous. Not only for the above mentioned reasons, but on larger bodies of water the current below the ice can eat away at the ice from below. So please, for safety's sake exercise due caution if and when Lake Michigan freezes up!

The video below shows the difference in burning between a dry Christmas tree and one that has been properly watered and maintained. As you can see, the difference is very drastic.

In fact, fires caused by Christmas trees have lead to the following statistics:

Between 2007-2011, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 230 home fires that started with Christmas trees per year. These fires caused an average of 6 deaths, 22 injuries, and $18.3 million in direct property damage annually.

On average, one of every 40 reported home fires that began with a Christmas tree resulted in a death, compared to an average of one death per 142 total reported home fires.

Electrical problems were factors in one-third (32%0 of home Christmas tree structure fires.

Two of every five (39%) home Christmas tree fires started in the living room, family room, or den.

Overloading electrical circuits is another leading cause of fire during this time of year so please be mindful of overloading outlets and circuit breakers. We wish everyone the best during this holiday season and hope that you all have a safe and merry time with family and friends.

On behalf of everyone at the Glen Lake Fire Department,

Stay Safe and Have a Happy Holiday Season!

While most are very familiar with the hazards of this wonderful fluffy white stuff, there are just a few things we want to remind you of.

Prepare a readiness kit to keep in your vehicle. Blankets, snack bars, and a shovel are highly recommended.

While outside, be mindful of traffic and others hazards. Wear bright colors that can easily be seen.

Remember that snow, ice, and limited visibility complicate travel so be sure to leave a little extra room between vehicles.

Limited visibility affects both you and other drivers equally, so please keep your headlights on to help others see you better.

Clearing off all windows as well as the top of your car and all lights can greatly assist you in seeing clearly, as well as help prevent minor whiteout type conditions from the blowing snow off your vehicle.

DO NOT pass snow plows as their blades extend out on both sides in an effort to keep lanes clear for travel. Stay calm, allow a little extra time, and we can all stay safe and get where we need to go.

Have a safe winter!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07645297918257793520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2196425050922333758.post-40005750597425384952014-11-04T15:35:00.002-05:002014-11-04T15:35:58.143-05:00Time Change! As everyone knows, this past weekend we turned the clocks back one hour. While the time change is not a critical event for most, those of us who live an active lifestyle in the outdoors have to face the reality that afternoon workouts may now be nearing the twilight hours.
For runners, cyclists, and drivers alike, please keep in mind that the time change can affect how well people can see you during your workout as the daylight generally makes you more visible. If you are working out or driving near twilight, dawn, or in the dark please remember these few tips.
Runners and cyclists:

Wear bright colors

Wear reflective swatches and clothing

Carry a flashlight or wear a lighted vest/ headlamp

Drivers:

Be mindful that regardless of the time of day, someone may be out along the road

With the seasons changing, animals are more active as well so please be mindful of them as well

Should you see runners or cyclists, give them at least three feet of space and slow down when possible.

Thanks and Stay Safe Out There!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07645297918257793520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2196425050922333758.post-23459324837070155122014-10-20T11:18:00.000-04:002014-10-20T11:18:04.535-04:00Training Update! As many of our page visitors are aware, we handle a wide array of emergency situations. In a single day we could respond to a fire, water incident, auto crash, or medical emergency. As part of our required training all members of our staff recently completed a Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) course.
While a refresher for most employees, PHTLS is a course that reviews and trains over traumatic injuries of all types from falls to automobile accidents. With this training our staff will be be better prepared, should an incident occur.
Other recent training our staff has completed includes hazardous materials training which reviewed how to identify hazardous materials incidents. Both PHTLS and the hazardous materials trainings were part of nationally recognized curriculum, but there is much more that training and education that goes on every day. With the State of Michigan requiring over 240 hours of training for firefighters annually, our entire staff stays on top of new techniques and maintains a vast knowledge base.
As always, if you ever have any questions please feel free to give us a call or stop by and we will be more than happy to share our knowledge with you.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07645297918257793520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2196425050922333758.post-37849069169514079992014-10-08T17:11:00.004-04:002014-10-08T17:11:29.295-04:00Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives!Hello Everyone, as you may be aware from radio, print, or other media this week is Fire Prevention Week. This week we are taking a very particular focus on smoke detectors as this year's theme is Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives!

Think you know about smoke alarms you?
Well, did you know smoke alarms should be checked once a month by pressing the button on the front to make sure they alarm properly? If you didn't now you do! In addition to monthly testing, batteries in your alarms should be changed every 6 months, not when they start chirping. Even hard-wired whole home systems have battery packs that need to be changed. And finally, as with anything else, smoke alarms get old and wear down. For this reason, the National Fire Prevention Agency (NFPA) and most major manufacturers recommend replacing your smoke alarms every 10 years. If you aren't sure how old they are, manufacturers put a sticker on the back with the manufactured date.
